Before you send it

  • Check your contract for the notice period. If it says nothing, the minimum depends on your length of service; see the notice period calculator.
  • Put it in writing: MOM requires notice to be in writing. An email counts.
  • Notice starts on the day you give it, and weekends and public holidays count.
  • Keep a copy of what you sent and when.
  • Using leave to shorten notice needs your employer's agreement. You are paid up to your new last day.

Common questions

Do I have to give a reason?

No. A short letter with your notice period and last day is enough.

Should I send a letter or an email?

Either. MOM accepts both as written notice. Many people send an email and attach or follow it with a signed letter if the company asks.

Can I leave without serving notice?

Yes, if you pay your employer salary in lieu of notice, or if your employer agrees in writing to waive it.

Does this work for Malaysia?

The letter does. The notice rules on this page are Singapore's; in Malaysia, check your contract and the Employment Act 1955.
